Event Details

Design Against War – DAW is an initiative born in March 2022 to give voice to projects, ideas and initiatives against all forms of war and aggression, proposed by students from all universities. . Launched by the Design System of Politecnico di Milano it has progressively turned into an initiative promoted by different universities and subjects.

DAW promotes the work Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty to underline the design community’s rejection of war and all forms of violence and repression against freedom of thought and expression, in favor of projects for building peace, emancipation and freedom. At the Politecnico di Milano, many students from Iran have expressed the need to contribute in a civilized way for condemning repression and supporting their people. Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty is a tribute to the victims of the protests in Iran, which broke out after the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in Tehran. More than 500 people were killed and more than 20,000 arrested during the demonstrations of the Women, Life, Freedom Movement, and still months later the repression continues and will not die down.

Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty designed by Elena Baharlouei with Anna Barbara, is a printed carpet in the style of the world-famous Iranian carpets known for their marvelous depictions. But the decorations of the Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty are a collection of 500 names among the victims of the protests. The visitor, who can admire the gracefulness of the print from afar, will understand as he approaches the tragic matrix of the pattern. The 300×700 sized carpet is edged with a series of loops that will hold messages and testimonies of solidarity to the Iranian women’s demand for freedom that visitors will want to leave and tie.

The carpet, hosted by the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano, in via Giuseppe Candiani, 72, will be installed in the atrium of building B2, on June 6th – with a performance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.- and exhibited until 13 June 2023. Like every flying carpet, Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty will then continue to tour the squares of Europe, testifying to the solidarity of the design community with the Women, Life, Freedom movement.

The Flying Magic Carpet for Liberty was produced and sponsored by the Publionda Group.
