Belgrade, 1941: two friends, Marko and Petar, fight against Germans. Three years later Petar, who had been arrested and tortured, escapes helped by his friend and hides in a wine cellar with other rebels. Marko persuades them to produce arms and other products for the black market.
The War ends but Marko keeps overseeing the weapons manufacturing he profits from enormously (he becomes one of Tito’s closest associates and advisors) leaving Petar and the other rebels in the cellar under the impression that the War is still going on above.
When Petar re-emerges he finds a new war with an only difference: his country doesn’t exist any more.

“Delirious in its excess, but never less than ferociously intelligent and operatically emotional, Underground represents one of those rare, exhilarating moments when an outsize artistic vision is fueled by an apparently unlimited budget. Not to be missed”. Dave Kehr, New York Daily News.
