Based on the novel by Ala al-Aswani, set in 1990, during the first Gulf War, the film wants to make a portrait of the Egyptian society after the coup d’état of 1952.
The setting of the story is the capital city and in particular the Yacoubian Building, built in the ‘30s in downtown Cairo. Through the parallel lives of its residents, the film shows us a critical portrait of the Egyptian society.

The Yacoubian Building was Egypt’s official submission to the 79^th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
