The logo of the Politecnico di Milano, officially adopted in 1942, reproduces a detail of the magnificent fresco of the School of Athens by Raphael in the Vatican, showing Euclid – in the guise of Bramante – that illustrates a theorem to his disciples with a compass. The preparatory cartoon – the largest Renaissance drawing that has survived – is kept in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, and recently restored and exhibited in a setting designed by Stefano Boeri’s architectural studio. On the occasion of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the painter’s death, taking inspiration from the logo of our University, the conference will guide us in the exploration of this pivotal work of the Italian Renaissance, in which Raphael portrayed the artists of his epoch as ancient philosophers.
