MANTOVARCHITETTURA 2021 – Ico Migliore

Ico Migliore, three-time Compasso d’Oro Award winning architect, is Professor at the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano and Chair Professor at the Dongseo University of Busan (South Korea).

A former pupil of Achille Castiglioni, in 1997 he founded the Milan-based studio Migliore+Servetto Architects with Mara Servetto, which works with important international brands, museum institutions and cities. Ranging from small to large-scale, their works are characterized by a constant research into the relationship between spatial design and identity, also by means of expressive use of light and new technologies, with a view to a new form of cultural sustainability.

Virtuality vs reality

The most urgent need may be that of recreating a dialogue between narrations – to which a physical space can give syntax and form – and visitors, driving recent exhibit design to focus on constructing narratives predisposed to interaction with users and their active presence within multi-dimensional sites, in which a determining part of the cognitive experience is the personalisation of time and methods of usage. The set up thus entrusts visitors with its interpretation, allowing them to see themselves reflected in it, in what could be termed a mirroring effect.
The field of interaction of the human gaze turns out to be potentially infinite, made up of details that continually constitute possible focal points. Along this horizon, the attention of the observer makes the necessary choice to establish a relationship of meaning with a precise object. The element that interests him/her is removed from the indistinct panorama of visual information to be redirected into the epicentre of the human context.
