MANTOVARCHITETTURA 2021 – Atelier Deshaus – Atelier Z+

Matteo Moscatelli, Professor of Architectural Design at Mantova Campus, introduces the lecture by Atelier Deshaus and Atelier Z+, based in Shanghai.

DESHAUS

Through several restoration projects of industrial sites along Huangpu River by Atelier Deshaus in Shanghai, the presentation reveals a microcosm of the urban waterfront regeneration of Huangpu River, in which industrial remains transformed into public urban spaces in the post-expo decade. These practices include the Long Museum West Bund on the former Beipiao Coal Wharf, the Modern Art Museum and its Riverfront Walkways transformed from the Laobaidu Coal Wharf, the Art Center on the former 80,000-ton Silos Grain Wharf, and the Riverside Passage transformed from the Coal Wharf of the former Shanghai Gas Factory, an urban space for a “flaneur”.

ATELIER Z+

The underlying reason why infrastructural operations of various types and scales have entered the contemporary Chinese architectural discourse can be found in the central preoccupation of modernist architecture, or how to shape publicness in the present and how to connect people.

The discussion is about how the design of Riverview Service Stations on the East Bund respond to the special requirements of publicity. The early predictions, design strategies and use feedbacks of publicity are expounded in three regards: the clues on protection, the protection of those being seen and the protection of the viewers. Based on quantitative evaluation and cluster analysis of the service conditions of the stations through post-occupancy investigation, it shows that the stations can accommodate multiple and alternate functions of various users all day long, indicating the relationship between creation of public space and public lifestyle in the metropolis.
