How to let rivers flow. River connectivity and other management issues

Rivers rank among some of the most threatened ecosystems in the world and are the focus of costly restoration programmes mainly targeted to improve habitat fragmentation caused by tens of thousands of dams and weirs. River barriers also perform essential functions for society and pose several management issues, including flood hazard. This event is an occasion to discuss recent advances in river barrier management and monitoring strategies and to share some experiences learned all around the world on the topic of river connectivity. This is also the occasion to launch the Citizen Science programme carried out within the context of the Adaptive Management of Barriers in European Rivers (AMBER) project (H2020). The AMBER project seeks to apply adaptive management to the operation of dams and barriers in European rivers to achieve a more efficient restoration of stream connectivity, and address impacts caused by river fragmentation. This event is organised under the umbrella of the World Fish Migration Day, a one day global-local event to create awareness on the importance of open rivers and migratory fish.
