Berlin, 1989. Christiane, single mother and proud communist of the GDR, goes into a coma for eight months due to a heart attack. When she wakes up, the Wall has fallen, along with forty years of socialism, and Germany is reunifying. To avoid a relapse, since she is still weak, her son and daughter Alex and Ariane decide to hide from her the biggest news of the twentieth century. Through false television news programs that talk about reunification in reverse, furniture in oriental style and products from state supermarkets, they reconstruct a microcosm of eastern Germany at their mother’s home. The movie is a comedy that combines the satire of the communist regime with a story of deep affection between a mother and her children.

Awards as best film to Stefan Arndt, best actor Daniel Brühl, best screenwriter Bernd Lichtenberg at 2003 European Film Awards.

“Good Bye, Lenin! beautifully mixes comedy, sentimentality, and cynicism” (TY BURR – Boston Globe).
