Event Details

Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a clean organic compound with physical properties similar to LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), that has been used for decades in the personal care industry (as a benign aerosol propellant), and is now increasingly being exploited for use as a clean burning alternative to LPG. DME is also an excellent fuel for Diesel engines, as it allows a high efficiency soot-free combustion with 90% less NOx emissions than standard automotive fuels, with no need of exhaust aftertreatment. If produced from biogenic sources, it also leads to favorable life-cycle CO2 balances. Oberon Fuels is a California-based company founded in 2010, at the forefront of the development of solutions for renewable DME production and distribution, in one of the most rapidly evolving markets worldwide. FPT Industrial is a leading manufacturer and seller of powertrains for industrial vehicles, with major R&D activities on the development of engines for alternative fuels.
The scope of this seminar is to present the activities and the vision on DME as sustainable fuel for the transport sector, given by representatives of leading companies in the DME value chain.

Titoli delle presentazioni:
• Elliot Hicks, Oberon Fuels: “DME in California – Bringing a New Fuel to Market”
• Gilles Hardy, FPT Motorenforschung: “DME as alternative fuel for long haul transportation”

Organized by:
Matteo Romano, Giulio Guandalini, Tommaso Lucchini

Elliot Hicks is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Oberon Fuels where he leads technology development of their small-scale modular platform. In his role, Elliot works across all areas of the company managing engineering projects, intellectual property development, and internal operations while supporting business development efforts.
He has worked in senior management positions in several technology startups covering a broad range of industries, including LEDs, solar cells, online media, and software consulting. With a lifelong interest in resource efficiency, alternative energy, and transportation technology, he has a broad understanding of the energy technology space and a passion for bringing novel solutions to market.
Elliot holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.B.A. from San Diego State University.

Gilles Hardy is a mechanical engineer working for more than 25 years in the field of Diesel engines with experiences in combustion system development, after-treatment systems, performance measurements and innovation. He is currently employed at FPT Motorenforschung AG in Arbon (Switzerland) as senior engineer. His main activities are focused on computational fluid dynamics, innovative combustion concepts and alternative fuels like DME or methanol.
