As part of the international conference “ARCHITETTURA FORMAZIONE MESTIERE. L’esperienza come materia del costruire tra Theorica e Pratica”, organized by Professor Emilio Faroldi and Maria Pilar Vettori, as a moment of in-depth study and debate around the themes of teaching and learning architecture, the dialogue between two prominent figures in the history, criticism, and practice of the architectural discipline: David Chipperfield and Francesco Dal Co. A conversation that stems from the reflection on the formative actions that can be adopted in order to redesign, in a contemporary form, the figure of the architect, understood as a scholar and intellectual responsible for the transformations of the environment in which we live and in which future generations will act.
David Chipperfield
He studied architecture at the Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He worked for Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers and Norman Foster before founding his own practice in 1985, that is now in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela. David Chipperfield is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an honorary fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the Bund Deutscher Architekten. In 2023 he was selected Laureate for the Pritzker Architecture Prize.He has taught and lectured at schools of architecture worldwide. In 2012 he curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the title ‘Common Ground. In 2017 he founded Fundación RIA, a private, non-profit entity that works towards meaningful economic, environmental and cultural development in Galicia, Spain. David Chipperfield has published numerous books and articles, including ‘On Planning – A Thought Experiment’ (2018), a publication that explores and theorises the urban qualities of contemporary urban developments. He was the 2020 guest editor of Italian design magazine Domus.
Francesco Dal Co
He obtained his degree in architecture from the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (IUAV) in 1970. Since 1980, he has held the chair of History of Architecture at the same institute and since 1996 at the Accademia di Architettura of the Università della Svizzera Italiana. Since 1996, he has been the editor of the magazine “Casabella”. He has held prominent roles such as Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and Scholar at the Center for Advanced Study of the Getty Center in Los Angeles. He has been a member of the Accademia di San Luca since 1989 and is the author of numerous international publications, including “Architettura contemporanea”, “Carlo Scarpa. Opera completa”, “Il tempo e l’architetto. Frank Lloyd Wright e il Guggenheim Museum” and “Renzo Piano”. He founded the “Andrea Palladio” architecture prize and has been part of juries for international and national architecture competitions. In 2014, he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Institute of British Architects. Since 1981, he has directed the architecture sector of the publishing house Electa in Milan.
