The smart city is not just a question of technological implementation. To be smart, a city must be able to build the capacity to better understand and govern its dynamics and ‘sensations’ in order to make better use of resources (tangible and intangible ones) and improve people’s well-being and environmental quality, while respecting the rights of nature. The challenge today is to connect places, people and nature through collective urban intelligence to build a shared, open and transparent governance of cities. The smart city, therefore, not only observes and measures processes, but also supports urban management and planning through the collaborative contribution of all. The ongoing research at the Politecnico di Milano outlines some paths and trends to approach and redefine the concept of smart city.
