I want to present some of my projects, but from a specific point of view: that of the material, or the materiality. I must say that I don’t believe the material determines something in itself. Architecture is the exercise of an architect’s freedom. Almost nothing is ever given. Naturally, there is the law of gravitation, the economic restrictions, and the stupid normative, always coercitive. But the most determining drawing’s factor is always the architect’s freedom, deriving from his discipline’s mastery, from his knowledge, from his culture and from his will of risk and innovate. Nevertheless, as there are many ways for teaching architecture, there are many ways also to show it. In my Lecture I’ll explore one of these factor, that of materiality. However, it has to remain clear that it’s a purely methodologic decision. Logically, I’m without any doubt interested in the project in its complexity. Our architecture wants to pay attention to materials. We try to explore the expressive possibilities of different materials. On one side, this allows us to try to dominate the different technics and exploit their potential; and, on the other side, also avoid the danger of repeating ourselves. Repetition brings to boredom, and boredom is the architect’s death. When the architect starts to repeat known formulas, to avoid experimentation, to copy himself, he dies of boredom, intellectual boredom. Because creativity borns from fascination, from wonder.
