Abstract:

This webinar will, firstly, give an overview of the research areas and centers at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho as well as the educational offers for students who want to carry out an Erasmus experience at the University of Minho.

In the second part of the webinar, different ongoing researches will be presented in the field of biomedical and industrial engineering at the University of Minho. In the biomedical engineering field, some works including numerical simulations by using Ansys® software will be presented. Some ongoing projects at the ALGORITMI research center in the scope of Industrial Engineering and Management will also be shown.

To finish, a case of study will be presented regarding an exceptional multidisciplinary teaching experience during summer with the collaboration of both undergraduate and graduate students of different engineering areas. The project developed was entitled i9Masks, and aimed to create transparent facial masks, a personal protective equipment indispensable to control both public and personal health, for preventing the COVID-19 spreading rate.

Violeta Meneses Carvalho completed the Integrated Master in Biomedical Engineering in June of 2020 by the University of Minho and her area of expertise is Biomaterials, Rehabilitation, and Biomechanics. Currently, she is an invited assistant at the Production and Systems Department where teaches statistics and numerical methods. At the same time she is performing a PhD at the Mechanical Engineering Doctoral program at the University of Minho and also an internship at INL, International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory. Moreover, she is Guest Editor in the special Issue “Micro/nanofluidic and Lab-on-a-Chip Devices for Biomedical Applications” (Micromachines, MDPI). Up to now she published 12 papers in ISI indexed journals, and 2 book chapters.
