Abstract:
In light of the increasing emphasis on achieving sustainability within global supply chains, Meng Jia and her co-authors have conducted a study on prevalent strategies and practices employed by global brands, with a particular focus onĀ sustainability-oriented supplier development (SSD) projects. Their research, which has resulted in the publication of two papers so far, provides valuable insights into the intricate interactions and knowledge transfer processes involved in multi-tier SSD projects. For instance, the study examined the role and involvement of suppliers in SSD, employing theĀ theory of boundary-spanningĀ and boundary objects to assess supplier engagement in extending and internalizing SSD projects. The research highlights theĀ critical importance of social capitalĀ and absorptive capacity for suppliersā successful participation in SSD projects, and it also emphasizes the necessity for focal firms to considerĀ suppliersā unique needs and characteristicsĀ when implementing SSD projects. Looking ahead, the research team is interested in exploring the dissemination and scaling up of SSD projects across the entire supply chain. Current research and practices often focus on a limited number of key suppliers, which is insufficient for achieving a substantial impact on the entire supply chain. Additionally, practitioners are keen to understand the generalizability and transferability of SSD projects. The authors invite the audience to engage in discussions and provide comments on the existing research and potential future directions.
